Water efficiency refers to practices, products, or systems that use less water than traditional products or systems without sacrificing performance. Water-efficient products can include graywater use and low-flow water fixtures (such as toilets or faucets). Water-efficient practices can include landscaping with plants that require less water, use of rainwater for irrigation, and stormwater management.

2008 is the International Year of Sanitation (IYS), WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) has taken the opportunity to make sanitation a major focus in its 2008 update report, entitled 'Progress on Drinking-water and Sanitation: special focus on sanitation.' Global Network for Environment and Economic Development Research (GNEEDER), an NGO, the Centre for Youth, Family and the Law, a community-based organisation, and the Sustainable Ibadan Project, a quasi-governmental organisation joined forces to find a solution to the problem of water pollution arising from the disposition of abattoir waste.
