In 1995, major cities accounted for 20% of the region’s total population, second largest after Latin America. Yet countries in the region are lagging behind in implementing needed economic policy and governance reforms. The lack of secure property rights and difficult access to land have contributed to the proliferation of slums and informal/squatter settlements in cities in the region. More   NGO Perú: NGO Ciudad Saludable Recieves Skoll Award The Peruvian NGO Ciudad Saludable has been awarded with $ 615 000 for three years by the Skoll Foundation to “organize small enterprises that work on recycling activities. It will improve their current work conditions, increase their incomes and achieve healthier and cleaner cities”. More  Poverty Resources Centres for Urban Agriculture and Food Security The dgPoverty Community highlights the recent launching of the RUAF (Resources Centres for Urban Agriculture and Food Security) new website. The RUAF Foundation aims to contribute to urban poverty reduction, employment generation and food security and to stimulate participatory city governance and improved urban environmental management. This new website provides a better overview of the RUAF activities in the various regions and the products generated by the RUAF partners on a large number of topics. Visitors can access to its Bibliographic and Donor databases as well as an Experts database, the Urban Agriculture Magazines in seven languages and a number of weblinks.
