Culture-led urban regeneration, which often goes hand in hand with tourism-led regeneration, has become a widespread urban strategy pursued by many cities. Heritage, in this context, constitutes an invaluable asset -- a major strength and opportunity that provides cities with a competitive edge on the global market. More   Water Resources Management Fourth World Water Forum The World Water Forum meets every three years. The Fourth Forum took place in March in 2006 in Mexico City, focusing on “Local actions for a Global Challenge.” With thousand of attendees and 121 country delegates, it addressed harnessing water for growth, providing water more efficiently, using it in a more environmentally conscious manner, and preventing it from causing natural disasters. More   Environment and Development Environmental Problems in Growing Cities The world's population and poverty are increasingly being concentrated in urban areas. Urban environmental problems predominantly affect the poorest sections of society as they have the maximum exposure to unsafe levels of air and water pollution while having the least access to healthcare. As the urban population increases due to natural growth as well as increasing migration, the burden on urban services and infrastructure continues to rise. Several urban environmental problems such as air pollution, water pollution, and excessive natural resource consumption are actually regional in scale, requiring effective regional governance in addition to local city-level initiatives. More   Urban Development Challenges for Cities in the Middle East and North Africa Urban areas in the Middle East-North Africa region are growing at a rate of 2.1% per annum. In 1995, major cities accounted for 20% of the region’s total population, second largest after Latin America. Yet countries in the region are lagging behind in implementing needed economic policy and governance reforms. The lack of secure property rights and difficult access to land have contributed to the proliferation of slums and informal/squatter settlements in cities in the region. More   NGO Perú: NGO Ciudad Saludable Recieves Skoll Award The Peruvian NGO Ciudad Saludable has been awarded with $ 615 000 for three years by the Skoll Foundation to “organize small enterprises that work on recycling activities. It will improve their current work conditions, increase their incomes and achieve healthier and cleaner cities”. More  Poverty Resources Centres for Urban Agriculture and Food Security The dgPoverty Community highlights the recent launching of the RUAF (Resources Centres for Urban Agriculture and Food Security) new website. The RUAF Foundation aims to contribute to urban poverty reduction, employment generation and food security and to stimulate participatory city governance and improved urban environmental management. This new website provides a better overview of the RUAF activities in the various regions and the products generated by the RUAF partners on a large number of topics. Visitors can access to its Bibliographic and Donor databases as well as an Experts database, the Urban Agriculture Magazines in seven languages and a number of weblinks.
