International trade policies are essential to sustainable development and to issues that promote employment, livelihood, entitlements and rights for billions of people in the developing world. The World Trade Organization's Fifth Ministerial in Cancún, Mexico, from September 10-14 brought together representatives from more than 140 countries, both rich and poor, to decide regulations that will govern international trade for decades.

This Development Gateway Cross-Topic Special provides resources from eight Development Topic pages as they relate to issues discussed in Cancún. Topics range from agriculture and fair trade for local producers to direct foreign investment and trade-related intellectual property. In an exclusive DG interview, Dr. Yash Tandon, a founding director of the International South Group Network (ISGN) and head of the Southern and Eastern African Trade Information and Negotiations Initiative (SEATINI), discusses the influence — and hopes — of civil society from the global South on WTO trade talks.
