The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) set by the UN consist of eight goals to improve the human condition by 2015. Goal 8 --to develop a global partnership for development -- is the most inclusive and complex of the MDGs. It consists of seven specific targets where global partnerships can make a difference in quality of life in poor countries and up to 16 indicators that can measure their success on the ground. From partnerships that promote trade and debt reduction to those facilitating decent work for youth and access to affordable drugs in developing countries, Goal 8 requires a commitment of all players to work as partners unparalleled in human history.

This Cross-Topic Special on global partnerships reflects a growing focus by the Development Gateway on how what we do relates to the MDGs. Topic pages with highlights relevant to Goal 8 targets are identified, while others reaffirm the momentum toward global partnerships in topics indirectly related to the MDGs. With renewed interest today in partnerships for global security, the momentum is growing. Georg Kell, executive head of the UN's Global Compact, talks with the Gateway about progress in advancing the partnership model.
