ISSUES ICT Awards: Recognizing Leaders and Pioneers |
International competitions, often accompanied by handsome cash prizes, have stimulated innovation in developing new ICT applications around the world and helped support worthy projects already launched. Commentary follows from three of the most prominent ICT awards programs—the Development Gateway Awards, which concluded its second annual awards program in Beijing, China, in September 2005; the Stockholm Challenge Award, one of the oldest awards held annually in Sweden; and the Tech Museum Awards for Innovation, now in its fifth year in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley.

We also heard about the breathtaking speed at which these new technologies
are being taken up in developing countries. But despite this rapid progress,
there is still a long way to go in extending their reach into isolated
communities and in using them to advance economic and social development. This
is why the Development Gateway Award was conceived. It highlights ICT
initiatives that have had a clear and significant impact so that more people can
understand and appreciate ICT’s catalytic role in advancing development. It
helps us all learn from these extraordinary examples of what can be accomplished
through the power of ICT. As Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus said at the
2004 award ceremony: "Not only has the Development Gateway Award inspired
Grameen's staff to do more, it has inspired technology people around the world
to design similar or more innovative ideas to make a change in the lives of the
poor, women, and excluded people."
The Stockholm Challenge is a global ICT awards pioneer that has been running for
more than 10 years since 1994. The Challenge has collected over 3,000 projects
during that time and has brought almost 1,000 entrepreneurs together at the
spectacular annual final events in Stockholm. The idea of using an awards
program to map, find and invite ICT projects and teams to come together from
around the world is a perfect way of helping struggling innovators take the next
step.
As we celebrate the fifth year of the Tech Museum Awards, we are reflecting on
the impact of the program. Through ongoing contact and periodic surveys we have
asked our Laureates how they have been benefited by the Tech Awards. Overall the
Laureates have let us know that the Awards have provided heightened visibility
and much needed validation for their organizations. They have emulated the
lessons of Silicon Valley, importing best business practices and the
entrepreneurial spirit that characterizes this tech region. Read

The Global Knowledge Partnership Collaborative Awards give international recognition to successful innovators in ICT for Development - champions of initiatives using ICT for local relevance and community needs. The Awards also globally showcase how ICT can be used strategically to solve practical development problems. The Collaborative Awards are a mechanism to gather success stories in ICT4D, which contributes to sharing knowledge - a defining activity of the Global Knowledge Partnership. The awards process builds capacity within a global community of project champions; allowing peers to exchange knowledge and create action from learning. Read full commentary
