Indigenous Peoples
How Globalization Impacts A Poor and Excluded Population
Indigenous peoples have historically been among the poorest and most excluded populations in the world. Many in the development field caution that the growth of global markets and the expansion of western cultures will further threaten their well-being. • This cross-topic special highlights the effects of globalization on indigenous peoples. It coincides with the meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva from July 21-25 where the issue is being discussed. •Among the questions addressed here are: What is the impact of urban migration on indigenous peoples? What is the impact of HIV/AIDS ? What is the role of NGOs? How can indigenous languages and cultures be preserved ? How are indigenous youth coping with change? The voices of indigenous people can also be heard in this special, as leaders emerge to chart courses for their own people.
