Sustainable Telecenter for Poverty Reduction?

The greatest challenge in implementing a telecenter for poverty reduction purposes is its sustainability. How can it be sustained if the beneficiaries are the poor who could, most likely, not afford to access the telecenter services if it is chargeed commercially. Even greater the challenge is if such telecenter is implemented at a village level with population of only a couple of thousand people. The above question is being addressed by UNDP and the Ministry for Development Planning in Indonesia with a three years project "Partnerships for e-Prosperity for the Poor" launched at the end of 2004. Three telecenters in Central and East Java have been established and four others will follow in Sulawesi and Papua islands. More Information can be accessed at http://www.ict4pr.org
