With its white sand, sunny blue skies and cashew nut trees, Miramar Beach in the port city of Beira, Mozambique, has all the right ingredients to draw tourists from all over the world.

But that is not all this idyllic coastline attracts. 'The beach is fertile ground for the spread of the [HI] virus, because so many people's paths cross there,' said Victoria Machava, who works for the Beira municipal health department.

Religious leaders play a key role in shaping the health-seeking behavior of their communities—particularly with respect to family planning and reproductive health, topics where science, religion, culture and morality profoundly intersect. The Extending Service Delivery (ESD) Project is pleased to announce the launch of a new training tool that will help religious leaders to better understand reproductive health issues and to positively influence the choices made within their communities.

Save the Children has worked in Central Asia to better serve the great needs of children and best use the vital resources of donors. Save the Children recently merged programs and activities with other members of the International Save the Children Alliance who also have programs in Central Asia. These programs focus on five priority initiatives: Child Protection, Education, Food Security, Health, and HIV/AIDS.

The Millennium Project publishes a report periodically assessing the current state of the world and projecting developments in the future. The 2008 report is to be published in August 2008; the website provides information on the report and a ten page summary. The report and accompanying CD are expensive, but the summary can be downloaded free. by Jerome C. Glenn, Theodore J. Gordon, and Elizabeth Florescu.

A study based on WHO surveys finds high risk of cervical cancer among women in developing countries due to lack of regular screening programmers and unequal access to healthcare. Poor and older women, most likely to develop the disease, are also least likely to be screened.
