Lessons Learned from Abolishing School Fees in Africa
As an instrument for the achievement of the Education for All (EFA) objectives, the School Fee Abolition Initiative (SFAI) strives to accelerate progress towards universal quality education for all by supporting policies that will help remove cost barriers that prevent parents from enrolling and maintaining their children at school. Its main objective is "to provide guidance and support to countries planning to abolish school fees with respect to the development and implementation of such policies.” This paper presents the experiences and lessons from six African countries which have introduced school fee abolition policies in recent years (Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania).
