There are two types of technologies which are developed envisioned with the purpose to help disabled people; technology to change the disabled person, and technology to change the environment or assist disabled persons to navigate the environment. Technologies being developed in impoverished nations to increase well being, such as water purification, proper sanitation and information technologies, are not necessarily developed considering the needs of the disabled. The development of adaptive devices is not enough. Accessibility is key. Even accessing a washroom can be a major issue. Ensuring accessibility and availability is also of very high importance when taking into account that more than 80% (400 million) of disabled people live in developing countries, are poverty-stricken, have limited access to education, employment and basic health care, preventing their full participation in family and community activities and benefiting from their socio-economic rights. How much are disabled people involved, or even considered, in the decision making process regarding R&D and policies?
