Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change: A Human Rights Issue
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report published in early 2007 confirmed that global climate change is already taking place and having an impact on many communities around the world. The report found that communities who live in marginal lands and whose livelihoods are highly dependent on natural resources are among the most vulnerable to climate change.

A glance at media stories or listening to political discussion on indigenous affairs would suggest decades of policy have produced a quagmire of failure, where wellmeaning ideas battle with political ideologies and nobody wins. The truth, though, is somewhat more complicated — especially when use is made of historical official statistics.

The core mission of the re-established CHT Commission is to promote respect for human rights, democracy, and restoration of civil and political rights, participatory development and land rights in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh. The Commission considers the implementation of an equitable system of land title registration, and of settlement of land rights disputes, to be the key to a peaceful and harmonious future for the peoples of the CHT

The Human Rights Council adopted the list of 13 candidates for special procedures mandate holders proposed by the President of the Council. The list adopted included the names of the five independent experts appointed by the Council as members of the new Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

In a path breaking decision, the Perak government decided to commission a comprehensive study to determine the size of the Orang Asli community's customary-cum-ancestral land. The move is to protect the community as its ancestral land had been given to others without consent.

The 16th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development was held in New York in May 2008. This year, the session was dedicated to reviewing issues related to Agriculture, Rural Development, Land, Drought, Desertification and Africa. Indigenous Briefs is a collection of issue papers examining these topics from African indigenous perspectives.

The Frontlines forum is to explore the experiences in dealing with the effects of climate change of rural or indigenous communities living in small islands, the circumpolar Arctic, high-altitude zones, low-lying coastal areas, tropical forests, desert margins and other vulnerable environments. For many people, climate change is a distant threat but, for these vulnerable communities, it is already a reality.
