Indigenous peoples have traditionally a very special relationship to the lands and natural resources of their habitat. Based on a subsistence economy, natural resouces and land represent for indigenous communities key assets to ensure their livelihoods. In particular, in recent years increased economic development and natural resource exploration have caused tremendous strains on indigenous communities. This issue will highlight the current struggle of indigenous peoples to secure their land rights and to manage natural resources in a sustainable manner in order to secure the future of their families and communities.

In many countries around the world the access to basic and secondary education are significantly worse for indigenous epoples than for the rest of society. This issue will highlight resources and data describing the current situation of indigenous education and illustrate case studies and programs supporting bilingual and intercultural education as well as the improved access of education to indigenous communities.
