Getting married in Nigeria often requires more than just the bride and groom turning up at the altar, and having witnesses and wedding rings present: many Christian churches also require an HIV test certificate. It may not seem particularly compassionate, but in an era when sex before marriage is the norm, several orthodox and some pentecostal churches are promoting mandatory testing as clear-eyed thinking.

Burkina Faso's national AIDS Council has published a nutrition guide to help people living with HIV to identify nutritious local foodstuffs: guavas, cassava and cashew apples are identified as being rich in vitamins; other foods like baobab leaves, dried okra and fish are rich in iron. Besides using local produce, organisations are searching for innovative ways to provide food to vulnerable communities affected by HIV.

An HIV testing campaign launched in Lesotho in 2005 has failed to meet its goals because of a lack of funding and administrative issues, according to a report released on Tuesday by Human Rights Watch and the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa, AFP/Yahoo!
