The Rise in Food Prices, the Pressure on Inflation in all Countries

'The stated goal of the Warana 'Wired Village' project is not only to increase the efficiency and productivity of the sugar cane cooperative, but also to provide a wide range of information and services to 70 villages around Warana. The project aims at giving villagers access to information, in their local language, about crops and agricultural market prices, employment schemes from the government of Maharashtra, and educational opportunities.'

RiceTec had made 20 far-reaching claims related to Basmati in Patent No. 5663484. As a result of a Supreme Court case filed by the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, the Government of India challenged 3 claims related to rice grain (No.s 15-17) in April 2000. ‘The Results using household data for ten observations on nine low-income countries show that the short-run impacts of higher staple food prices on poverty differ considerably by commodity and by country, but, that poverty increases are much more frequent, and larger, than poverty reductions. The recent large increases in food prices appear likely to raise overall poverty in low income countries substantially.’

'In recognition of the potato’s global importance as a staple food, the United Nations has designated 2008 as the International Year of the Potato, or IYP. On behalf of the CGIAR, the International Potato Center (CIP) has taken the lead in activities designed to mark the year, working closely with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and with the government of Peru, which hosts CIP and was responsible for the nomination that led to the UN decision to make 2008 the IYP.'

'New poverty estimates published by the World Bank reveal that 1.4 billion people in the developing world (one in four) were living on less than US$1.25 a day in 2005, down from 1.9 billion (one in two) in 1981.
