FAO to Host High-Level Conference on World Food Security
Description:
ROME, April 28 (Xinhua) -- The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will host a high-level international Conference on World Food Security and the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy in Rome from June 3-5.

Heads of state and government and ministers will discuss the current global food situation with soaring food prices, how climate change affects agriculture, and how agriculture can contribute to reduce climate change, according to FAO's latest press release.

The objective of this conference is to assist countries and the international community in finding sustainable solutions by identifying the policies, strategies and programs required to safeguard world food security, according to FAO.

An estimated 850 million people in the world today suffer from hunger. Of those, about 820 million live in developing countries, the very countries expected to be most affected by climate change.

Governments, international organizations, civil society, the private sector and other actors, must work together to address these challenges and to devise appropriate strategies and responses, FAO said.

According to FAO, the event will identify the new challenges facing world food security, supply and demand side, policies and market structure; promote a better understanding of the nexus between food security, climate change and bioenergy; and discuss and adopt required policies, strategies and programs for ensuring world food security, in particular measures to address soaring food prices.

The FAO's high-level conference will also deliver a declaration on "world food security and required actions."
