مقتطفات من كلمة سيادة السفير علي ماهر في مؤتمر ويكيمانيا 2008

السلام هو أحد أثمن ما سعت إليه الإنسانية، ورغم أنه ولسنوات طويلة ساد الاعتقاد أن السلام لا يتحقق إلا بالحرب، فإن تحقيقه لا يتأتى إلا بالجهد الجاد والمتواصل.

  إن أحد أهم التحديات التي نواجهها اليوم هو تعزيز السلام القائم على ثقافة سلام عالمية نابعة من  التعليم، ومن الاعتراف بحق كل فرد في الحفاظ على ثقافته مع احترام ثقافات وحريات الآخرين.

لا ينبغي النظر إلى السلام على أنه مطلب نخبة معينة أو مجموعة بعينها، بل على أنه سلوك اجتماعي يتسم به المجتمع ككل، وكحق إنساني يجب الإصرار عليه والعمل على تحقيقه. ومن ثمَّ، يتضح الارتباط الوثيق بين إقامة مجتمع دولي متجانس، وبين حق البشر في التعليم.

مما يقرب من عامين، تم تأسيس معهد دراسات السلام بالإسكندرية كمنظمة غير حكومية تهدف إلى الترويج لثقافة السلام. ولم تكن لترأس مثل هذا المعهد إلا سيدة مصر الأولى، السيدة سوزان مبارك.

وفي هذا السياق، تم التعاون مع عدد من المؤسسات الدولية والجامعات المهتمة بدراسات السلام في جميع أنحاء العالم.

كما نتطلع أيضًا إلى التعاون مع مؤسسة ويكيميديا، الهادفة إلى نشر المعرفة والمعلومات، فهذا الهدف حق من حقوق الإنسان كما هو أحد مسئولياته. وذلك ليس فقط كسبيل للتعليم، بل أيضًا كوسيلة لربط الناس معًا، ولتعزيز الحوار والتعايش، والتفاهم المتبادل.
